1942 is a vertically scrolling shoot 'em up (a genre of video game) made by Capcom and released for the NES, the arcade, the MSX, and the Commodore 64.
1942 is set in the Asian theater of World War II. The goal is to reach Tokyo and destroy the entire Japanese air fleet. The player (the American "Super Ace") pilots a plane, and has to shoot down enemy planes. Besides shooting, the player can also perform a "loop-the-loop" to avoid enemy fire.

Destroying a formation of red enemy planes will result in a power-up, the most powerful of which is thunder: This destroys all enemies currently displayed. The other power-ups consist of a double shot, a pair of wingmen to fire alongside the plane, and a thousand points (although a thousand points are also received when a power-up is collected).

There are 32 levels, the ending of each finishes with the plane landing upon an aircraft carrier. All enemies still displayed when it lands on the carrier will explode and earn the player points. The game was first released for the arcade, in 1984.

1942 is the first game in the 1940s series, followed by 1943: The Battle of Midway, 1941: Counter Attack and 1944: The Loop Master. The last game in the series is 19XX: The War Against Destiny, which is set during a fictional war in the future.
